If you buy Titleist early, buy the bottom of the range without embarrassment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>The right models\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Irons — T350.\u003C\u002Fstrong> The most forgiving in the family and still restrained enough to look good behind the ball.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Driver — GT1\u003C\u002Fstrong>, or \u003Cstrong>GTS2\u003C\u002Fstrong> with a light shaft. GT1 is the easier club and there is no reason to avoid it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Fairway metal — GT1 fairway\u003C\u002Fstrong>, in a 5-wood rather than a 3-wood. Considerably easier and far more useful.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Hybrid — GT1 hybrid\u003C\u002Fstrong>, replacing your 4- and 5-irons.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Wedges — Vokey SM11\u003C\u002Fstrong> in mid bounce, or simply the set pitching wedge plus one sand wedge to start.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Putter — a used Scotty Cameron\u003C\u002Fstrong>, or anything that suits your stroke. This is not where a new golfer’s money should go first.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>What to leave alone\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>T100, T150, 620 CB, 620 MB and GTS4. All of them are excellent, none of them will help you, and several of them will make the game harder.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Also avoid buying fourteen clubs at once. Add more as gaps appear in your actual play rather than filling them in advance.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Where the money should go\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Get the length right.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Standard length suits a narrower range of people than the industry implies, and clubs that are too long are the single most common equipment barrier for new golfers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Take lessons before upgrading.\u003C\u002Fstrong> A lesson costs a fraction of a driver and will improve your golf considerably more.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3>Buying used\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>A previous-generation Titleist game-improvement set is excellent value. Iron technology moves slowly, and a two- or three-generation-old set delivers nearly everything the current one does.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Check the grooves, check the grips, and have lofts and lies checked once you own it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cblockquote>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Buying tip:\u003C\u002Fstrong> Buy T350 and spend the difference on a fitting.
